The international meat market sees notable developments: Argentina restarts key beef plants, overcoming financial hardships and ensuring regular exports to China. The resumption involves two major facilities, resolving employment issues for over 400 workers and bolstering domestic meat supply. Meanwhile, China extends qualification for 10 US meat factories until 2031, covering pork and poultry exports, ensuring continuity in the market. These updates mark a pivotal phase for global meat trade, enhancing supply chains and intensifying competition in Chinese markets. Explore the latest developments in the meat industry and their impact on international trade.
Recently, the international meat market has successively released important news: two major beef slaughterhouses in Argentina have restarted production, and the General Administration of Customs, in its latest announcement on June 9, announced the extension of registration validity for 10 US meat factories.
According to local Argentine media reports, Frigorífico Pico, which had suspended operations due to a financial crisis, is about to fully resume operations. This resumption involves two slaughtering bases: Plant 2792 in Trenel and Plant 2531 in General Pico. The head of the Argentine Meat Workers' Union stated that this resumption will solve the employment problem of more than 400 employees, and employees were paid normally during the suspension period with no salary arrears.
Why Did Argentina's Plant 2531 (Frigorífico Pico) Shut Down?
The core reason can be summed up in two words: cash shortage!
As Argentina's largest beef exporter to China, this plant owed billions of pesos in massive debts. With banks pressing for repayment, unpaid electricity bills, and overdue payments to upstream cattle suppliers, the capital chain completely collapsed, leading to a direct production halt. This also caused Plant 2792 to suspend operations together, leaving over 400 employees unemployed.
Crucially: Plant 2531 has long been on the General Administration of Customs' list of meat enterprises eligible for export to China, and its qualification for exporting to China has always remained normal.
According to the resumption plan, the initial daily slaughter capacity will reach 350 to 400 cattle, with production capacity to be gradually increased based on market demand. With the two plants restarting slaughter operations, Argentina's mainstream beef supply to China has officially returned to the market, which will effectively supplement domestic South American beef supply.
Customs: 10 US Meat Exporters to China Get Qualification Extension!
On June 9, the General Administration of Customs updated the list of meat products exported to China from countries or regions that meet the assessment and review requirements, announcing the extension of registration validity for 10 US meat factories. The specific adjustments are as follows:
The registration validity of the following 6 US pork factories has been extended to June 9, 2031:
17564, 47370, V105, V47269, V47423, V47575
The registration validity of the following 4 US poultry factories has been extended to June 9, 2031:
V105, V47269, V47423, V47575
This update ensures that meat products exported to China produced by the above enterprises will continue to meet China's import access requirements for the next five years.
Overall, the recovery of international meat production capacity and the extension of overseas enterprise qualifications have thoroughly brought the domestic imported meat market into a new stage of sufficient supply and intensified competition.
